CS2984: Introduction to Problem Solving
Homework Assignment 5

Due at 11:00pm on Tuesday, September 25
30 Points

See the General Guidelines for homework assignments.

This assignment may optionally be done with a partner. You are strongly advised to use a partner. If you do use a partner, then:

Below are three problems. For each solution, you must not only give the answer, but you must also give a detailed explanation for the reasoning used to reach the answer. Don't just give a "prettied up" version of the reasoning. Explain the process you truly went through to get the answer. If you went down dead ends, you should describe them. If you do this with a partner, it would be wise for one of the partners to act as a scribe to note down the reasoning process as you solve the problem.

Note that these problems have been assigned as part of the "externalize" heuristic section of the course. They are not meant to be done in your head! You will find it much easier to work on these problems while scratching on paper.

You should refrain from looking at the problems until you are actually sitting ready to work on them. If you work with a partner, try not to look at the problems for the first time until you and your partner are together.

Expect the problems to take some time to solve. You might not get them all solved during your first session.
