CS5014 Fall 2002 Assignment 9
Due Tuesday, 10/29 at the beginning of class
50 Points
Look at the July 2002 issue of IEEE Computer.
This is available on-line from the library, among other sources.
Select one of the following papers from that issue:
- Pop, et al
- Moret, et al
- Parvin, et al
- Paxia, et al
- Seo and Shneiderman
The paper you select must be different from the one that you used for
Assignment 8.
For the paper you select, write a review of the paper.
This review should be more than one page long (using the page formatting
specs from Assignment 2).
By review, I mean a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the
paper.
You should give examples of each. Do not summarize the paper more than
necessary to get your points across. You should point any out any
flawed technical issues in the presentation, or flawed assumptions.
Also indicate which parts of the paper are strong in some way.
When CS professionals are asked to review a paper, they are usually
asked to comment on things such as the following. Use these questions
as a guide in preparing your review.
-
Is the paper well-written? Could it be better organized in someway?
-
Is the paper complete? Are important details left out?
Are too many details given in some areas?
-
Is the paper correct? To the best of your knowledge, does the paper
make any claims that are not sufficiently obvious or justified by
data or references?
-
Are the objectives and the conclusions of the paper clearly-stated?
-
Does the paper make a real contribution to the literature?
-
Conclude with a recommendation on whether this paper should have been
published in IEEE Computer, and explain why or why not.
