CS4624 Spring 1998 Project Idea - Services for Students, Virtual Tours

• Purpose:

  Support services are available to students with and without disabilities both on campus and in the community. These accommodations are not utilized to their full potential since students often are not aware of their availability. This project would provide an awareness of and process to access available assistance.

• Description:

  Services for Students with Disabilities, a function of the Dean of Students Office, works with University departments and community agencies to identify appropriate accommodations as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This project would create a Virtual Tour of services available to students with disabilities at Virginia Tech. The tour would enhance the knowledge base for all students at Virginia Tech since many of the services are available to students without disabilities.

  The tour would include the following elements:

  1. Overview of the Dean of Students Office
  2. Procedures for disclosing and documenting a disability
  3. Information on Assistive Technology available at Virginia Tech including interactive experiences
  4. Support services available on campus for students with disabilities (and, time permitting, community services)

  The proposed project will allow participating students to acquire an understanding of the technology needs of people with certain disabilities.
