Ed / Harry: As you might imagine with CAVE up and running the demand is increasing and so John Kelso and I now live in interesting times. Of course we anticipated this so we have a simple philosophy that we are finding is not so easy to implement: "Access, Usability and Security". We will also give as many demos as is humanly possible with only two people (Kelso-Kriz) but the priority goes to those people who have CAVE projects both as proposed to NSF and "walkin" projects such as Joan McLain-Kark (ACITC CAVE Walkthru) and Dennis Jones (Star 2000) for example. If I've learn anything at all over the last 7 years teaching my visualization class and that is the student projects have been the beginning of almost everything good that has happened so I give a very high priority to student projects. On that last note John Kelso and I will be very glad to assist your students get going on their project. We will do this by .... 1. I made an "Introduction" to CAVE programming for students in my visualization class last Fall semester which was sufficient to get them started on CAVE programming. John and I will continue to update and add new material to this web site for your students Introduction to CAVE programming http://www.sv.vt.edu/class/esm5984/GenInfo/cave/prgintro.html 2. All student CAVE projects from last semesters class where required to not only show what they did but create a web page that explained how they did it which included a complete downloadable list of C++ classes so that others could build on top of work already done. A very good example was Jason Bestimt and Pranas Pauliukonis CAVE project "Expanding the Gaming Frontier to "True" 3D" posted at http://www.vt.edu:10021/J/jbestimt/project/home.htm 3. Other student CAVE projects are posted at http://www.sv.vt.edu/class/Student_Proj/class97/Class97.html 4. John Kelso's job is to create a usable CAVE environment so don't hesitate to contact John at kelso@vt.edu. 5. To make this resource accessible we have recently installed a Hokie Passport systems that will allow any faculty and student access with security. So when you are ready contact John and/or Ron Kriz to include you and your students on the passport list. The success of the CAVE will be measured by how many projects successfully use the CAVE and we will try our best to fullfill your needs in the limited time John and I have. John and I have some immediate issues on usablility that possible could be turned into a class project that would help others get access and make the CAVE more usable by others. Maybe your students might want to choose from this list. Let us know. Regards, Ron Kriz Ancient Chinese Curse: May you live in interesting times. ----- Begin Included Message ----- >From fox@vt.edu Tue Jan 13 21:20:16 1998 Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 21:22:51 -0500 (EST) From: "Edward A. I have listed "CAVE" as a possible project area for CS4624 students, Multimedia, Hypertext and Information Access. I've given you as contact person. If you don't want this, let me know. Otherwise, please, if anyone contacts you, assign them to help in any way you think they can learn and be of help. The course has Project Ideas and other information from its home page http://ei.cs.vt.edu/~mm/ Thanks, Ed PS I also listed one project that Harry Kriz wanted, on visualization of library information, but made him the contact, though eventually he wants to work toward the CAVE.
