SGML (Standardized Generalized Markup Language)
- Developed out of markup languages like Scribe, GML
- Approved in 1985
- Widely used for electronic publishing
- Implements model of Ordered Hierarchy of Content Objects (OHCO)
- Is actually a metalanguage, to describe markup languages
- DTDs: SGML becomes specialized through a Document Type Definition (DTD)
