Hypermedia System Design Applying the Dexter Model

Introduction to special issue

The field of hypermedia is concerned with the design and use of systems that support authoring managing and navigating networks of interlinked textual and multimedia information. Interest has grown in this field in recent years and today hundreds of systems can be found both commercially and in research settings. Unfortunately, these systems are almost totally incompatible and the designers of new systems usually find themselves starting from scratch.

Though recent standards like HyTime and standardizing proposals like MHEG begin to address issues of interchange and consistent storage formats, they offer almost no support for the designers of system behavior.
