Both exams will be closed book, closed notes. The format will be short essay, e.g., a question requiring 2-3 sentences or a short paragraph as an answer. A common sort of question would be to ask you to use an example to briefly describe a concept or technique.
Typically there will be 10-20 such questions, all worth the same amount.
