CS 3724: Information Visualizations                                In-class Activity 4: February 13

As a class, we have looked at and discussed a number of information visualizations, some based on hierarchical browsing, others based on more flexible indexing techniques. For you homework assignment each of you has identified a specific candidate visualization that could be used in your group project. Your task today is to analyze information or objects related to your project topic, and agree on a visualization technique that might be useful.

1. First, discuss and describe the information/objects you might visualize.  (This does not mean that you will necessarily build this visualization into your final design).  Be sure to say not just what the information is (e.g., products of some sort, documents, etc.), but also what the relevant attributes are (e.g., age, modification or selection history, category, …).

2.  Next, develop (e.g., using a bulleted list) a simple scenario of use for this visualization.

3. Identify any tradeoffs pertaining to this visualization (for example, it might take up a lot of display space or might involve potentially distracting animations).

3.  Last, make a rough sketch of the interactive visualization that you have envisioned…you can base this on FilmFinder, on the hyperbolic browser or others we have seen, or come up with new ideas.  Time permitting, we will share some of these at the end of class.
