Homework 1: Hierarchical Task Analysis

Due Friday, September 6

One way to organize and simplify information about a complex work situation is to create hierarchical task analyses (HTA) of central or problematic tasks. In this exercise, you will create an HTA of the task "checking out a customer at Krogers". The analysis should be done from the perspective of the cashier. It should begin with the groceries loaded onto the checkout counter and should end when a receipt is handed to the customer. Do not include packing of groceries into bags, etc., and assume that the cash register is in a normal and usable state.

There is no single 'right' answer for this exercise, although we will be looking to see that you have created a complete analysis. Remember to include decision or control rules where there are multiple steps. We will be checking to see that you understand hierarchical decomposition, and that you have made an effort to think carefully about the checkout task.

Use the examples in Chapter 2 as a model of the general format and level of analysis to follow. You may either hand-draw (neatly) the hierarchy or use a graphical editor of some sort. If the graph does not fit on a single page, be sure to indicate how it connects across pages.

Hand-in hardcopy in class with your name and ID.
