CS 3724 Midterm Review
The midterm will be a closed-book, closed-notes exam
EXCEPT for a single 8.5x11 sheet of paper with notes
ON ONE SIDE ONLY.
The questions will primarily come from material covered in class,
though material from the textbooks will be helpful.
In Shneiderman's DTUI, we have covered chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 10.
In Norman's DOET, we have covered chapters 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7.
You will have the entire class period to complete the midterm.
Several questions have multiple parts -- be sure to answer
each question completely.
There will be three types of questions on the midterm:
- Chronological orderings -- you will be asked to order
important developments in human factors. Consider the below example:
___Computer
___Egyptian heiroglyphics
___Windows 95
___Printing press
You should order the events 3-1-4-2.
- Multiple answer multiple choice -- you will be asked
to select the appropriate answer or answers to the question
Which of the following are essential in ethnographic observations?
a) ethnographers participate in participants' daily lives
b) ethnographers use participants as part of the project team
c) ethnographers ask participants to act out scenarios
d) ethnographers spend an extended period of time in a culture
You should select a and d.
- Essay questions -- the essay questions will have multiple parts.
The first part typically will test your knowledge of facts and
definitions important to HCI, while the other parts
will push you to think about deeper issues. Below is an example:
List three tasks for which humans perform better than computers.
How can an interface designer leverage each of these tasks in
creating an interface?
If you have any questions, please post them to the newsgroup so that
the professor, the TA, and your fellow students can help you to
answer them.
Good luck!
