Introductory Class - Projects
The in-class projects in this class should be "ice-breakers" or "getting-to-know-you" type activities. For example:
- Have students take a class pre-test and then discuss the results in-class. Take the same pre-test as a post-test and compare the results.
- Have the students read the proposed Classroom Etiquette guidelines. Then either discuss the expectations or have students develop their own rules. (Sample form to use - or an in-class project Instructor's version, student version for display.)
- Forming groups and undertaking a simple task that will enable students to get to know each other. In a small class this can be the learn what they can about one of their colleagues and then to introduce them to the rest of the class.
In preparation for forming groups, have each student (if this is an on-line class) take the The Keirsey Temperament Sorter Part I or Part II and from that form groups in which there are no duplication of results. Alternatively use the Behavioral Analysis Self Rating Form (still under construction). In either case students should bring the results of their analysis to class so that groups can be formed.
Alternatively as an ice-breaker have each student stand up, introduce themselves, and state what they expect to get out of the class (besides a grade of A), or what they think is the role of ethics in the computer science curriculum.
