Tech would be responsible for screening
it's students
By not offering a course in computer hacking, Virginia Tech
will not be responsible for providing security background checks for it's
students. In private industry and with the government potentially damaging
information is safe guarded from falling into the wrong hands. The moral
qualifications for the kind of course would be expensive and potentially
illegal for a public institution to require as a prerequisite.
- Do we know who we are teaching?
- How will we be reasonable confident that this information
won't be misused?
- A course on hacking would be potentially dangerous without
security checks.
- Virginia Tech would be on shaky ground if it required
mandatory security checks for it's computer science students.
Here's what others thought:
Position: Con
- You were already screen through the admissions department
and were deemed a "good and reasonable student".
Position: Con
- The class would be focused on preventing hacking, not
to encourage it.
