Abstract: Introduce students to privacy issues in the post communist country.
Goals for the activity: Have students discuss privacy issues and gain a better understanding of them.
Knowledge/ skills/ attitudes to be developed (behavioral objectives): Students will learn to make ethical judgments about privacy issues as both a citizens of the country with privacy laws.
Pre-class Activity: Read the Russian Federation Constitution (see References above) and the report on Privacy and Human Rights in Russia.
Procedure:
Break the class up into several groups.
Each group is given a scenario to complete. They should debate the pros and cons about each issue from the US point of view.
Reform the class together.
Each group gives a presentation about their scenario and the decisions they made.
The groups separate to reconsider their scenario, role-paying the Russian point of view.
Bring the class together for a second time to discuss the new findings.
Assessing outcomes: After the group presentations each student is given a hand-out of scenarios. The student will then write a short paragraph about how they would react in each scenario.
