Getting Credit
for Professional Activities
Fall 2002, Dr.
Rosson
Follow the procedures below
to ensure appropriate credit for the Professional Activities portion of your
course grade.
- Service learning efforts
require enrollment in the service learning option, at least 20 hours of service
learning during the term, and a brief report submitted at the end of the term.
- Other volunteer work
requires the student to submit a statement that describes the nature of the
work conducted, including the timing and location of the work, and the number
of hours involved. The statement must be signed by the student and by the
sponsor or organizer of the volunteer work.
- Participation in the
debates (up to 6 points) will be tracked by the GTA.
- Participation in the
Career Reception organizing committee (2 points) was documented by Ms. Sandy
Birch; no further action need be taken.
- Participation in the
Career Reception itself (2 points) will be accomplished by signing the attendance
sheet provided. This includes credit for non-graduating students who attend
in a supporting role (e.g., helping to set up, etc.).
- Participation through
leadership in a CS society (5 points) should be documented by a statement
from the student describing his/her position in the society and general duties
(including timing and location of contributions). The statement should be
signed by the student and by the supervising faculty member.
- Participation through
attendance at other CS-related events (e.g., research seminars, 2 points)
should be documented by a statement that briefly describes the event (including
topic, speaker name if relevant, time and date). The statement should conclude
with the sentence "I understand that submitting a false claim about my
attendance at this event is a violation ofthe Virginia Tech Honor Code".
The statement should be signed by the student and by an organizer/sponsor
of the event.
- Any other special cases
not covered here should be discussed with Prof. Rosson and/or Jonathan.
- Extra credit earned
via these activities will be calculated and applied automatically.
