CS3604 - Professionalism in Computing - McCrickard/Wheaton - Fall 2003

Resume/Cover Letter Assignment

This assignment requires you to write a resume and cover letter as if you were applying to the job position listed below.  The job is for Northrop Grumman, IT division.  Research the company as appropriate and write a cover letter/resume for that position.  Feel free to build off existing resumes that you might have, but make sure you tailor them to target this specific position.  Admittedly, this position might be a better fit for some of you than others given existing skill sets and past experience, so for those of you for whom this position isn’t an exact fit, you’ll have to identify skills and experiences that you have that are transferable to this position, and make that obvious in the cover letter and resume.

The cover letter should have three paragraphs: the first paragraph should state why you are writing, the second paragraph should be your qualifications and what makes you a good fit for the job, and the third paragraph should have information regarding how the company can get a hold of you (contact info).

Spelling and good grammar is essential in cover letters and resumes.  Remember this is really your 'first impression' as far as the company is concerned, and you want that first impression to be as impressive as possible.  So grammar and spelling errors will be seriously looked at (though note that with resumes, sentence fragments like 'managed five people' are acceptable for brevity purposes).

Neither the cover letter nor resume should exceed one page (each).  Also, note that you must use appropriate formatting for correspondence/letters for the cover letter.

Due Date

For both sessions, this assignment is due on Friday, September 12th. For Mr. Wheaton's students, this assignment is due at the beginning of class; For Dr. McCrickard's students, this assignment is due in the box outside Dr. McCrickard's office door (McB 623) by 2:59PM. Late assignments will be penalized according to the late assignments policy on the syllabus.

Grading

The grade sheet must be printed out and stapled to your assignment.  Read the grade sheet before turning in the assignment because it lists exactly what you will be graded on, so you can use it as a lower level specification.  Don't forget to sign the honor code.
