CS3414 Afterclass Notes --- 20 May, 2002
After some preliminaries, we talked about three introductory topics:
- The term Numerical Methods, and its predecessor
Numerical Analysis.
- Computational science: the source of most of the large
problems that numerical methods are concerned with; some see this as a
new paradigm, complementing the traditional modes of theory and
experiment.
- Why is 3414 in the CS curriculum?
- Historical importance
- Unique emphasis on accuracy and efficiency
- An application area that connects algorithms/software and
systems.
