CS 2605 Announcements

• One thing I neglected today was to discuss Eclipse.  If you decide to use it, follow the instructions below to get the localized version.  Then, go to Help Contents.  Choose the C/C++ Development User Guide, and under Getting Started, go to the CDT Managed Make Tutorial.  That will show you how to create an Eclipse project and get started using the environment.
• Since I still cannot modify the websites on the Department servers, here is the link to the Curator Server you will be submitting assignments to:

• The problems with account creation (see directions below) and remote access to the McB 118 lab seem to be fixed.  So, you should all be able to get started on Project 1 now.
• I will be uploading the current class roll to the Curator System shortly.  If you don't receive an email with your Curator password, let me know at class today.

Preliminary Announcements

• The force-add procedure for this course is posted on the CS Department web site.  I will bring force-add forms to the first class meeting, and make decisions about those requests by the following day.
• First-day attendance is mandatory.  Students who are enrolled but do not attend the first class meeting may be purged from the roll, making room to add other students who request a force-add.
• A lab is available for your use in McB 118/124.  You will need to request a free lab account.   Go to the CS Department home page, and select the link for the Admin Intranet (left side of the page).  Click on the Create Account link (left side of the page) and fill in the required information.
• We will be using version 3.4.x of the g++ compiler to test your projects for this course.  All the software you will need to complete this course is installed on the Windows XP machines in the McB 118 lab and the Linux machines in the McB 124 lab.

A localized version of the Eclipse development environment, including g++ version 3.4.4 is available.  Eclipse includes a competent debugger and source editing and control.  The KDevelop IDE available for Linux systems is also very good. 

An alternative way to get the g++ environment on your Windows system is the CygWin environment which provides a fairly complete UNIX environment within Windows.  The installation package is somewhat clumsy.  If you use this, be sure to expand the Devel tree and select everything relevant to g++.

There is no restriction on which development environment you use for the course.  However, all your programming assignments will be tested using g++ version 3.4.4.
