Microsoft Academic Alliance - Fall 2003

Under the terms of the MS Academic Alliance, all students enrolled in Computer Science courses at Virginia Tech are entitled to obtain certain MS products free of charge.  To do so:

  1. You must obtain a CS Lab account.  To to the CS Lab site www.cslab.vt.edu and take the Account Maintenance link to the account request form.  Fill it out and submit it.  Be sure you keep track of your lab password!
  2. Wait.  You will eventually receive an e-mail message with your login ID and password for the software download site at  msdn02.e-academy.com/vt_cs/.  Note that this is not an automated process, and it may take a day or two for the e-mail to be sent.
  3. Log onto the software download site with the login ID and password that was e-mailed to you.
  4. The site includes a number of products, including Visual C++ .NET (both 2002 and 2003 versions), the MSDN documentation, some operating systems, and other tools.
  5. For this course, you should download and install Visual C++ .NET 2003 and the MSDN documentation.  These are large downloads.  The .NET download is approximately 1.5 GB in size; the MSDN documentation amounts to approximately 1.8 GB.  (So, there's no hope over a modem connection.)  All of the machines in the McBryde 118 lab include CD burners, so you can do the downloads there, write them to CDs, and take them home.
