Basic Idea. A spreadsheet is a convenient, interactive, visual system for representing and manipulating tabular data.
Used for what? Financial data and reports, budgeting, keeping track of grades, etc. Any time you have rows and columns of data, and need to compute functions of those rows and/or columns, a spreadsheet is probably useful.
Famous examples: VisiCalc, Supercalc, Lotus 1-2-3, Excel.
